Gambia River: the hydrological situation remains under control in the Kédougou stations

The hydrological situation remains generally stable in the Gambia River basin, with green alerts maintained at several stations. In Kédougou, the water level has fallen by 42 cm in 24 hours and remains 3.57 meters below the alert level.

The latest data from the Tambacounda/Kédougou Water Resources Brigade indicates a generally reassuring hydrological situation this Thursday, August 13, 2026. Readings taken at 8 a.m. show water levels still well below alert levels at the main monitored stations.

In Kédougou, the Gambia River level is at 3.43 meters, compared to 3.85 meters the previous day, representing a drop of 42 centimeters in 24 hours. With the alert level set at 7 meters, the difference remains significant, at 3.57 meters below the alert threshold. Over the past year, the level has also decreased slightly by 27 centimeters.

The trend is also downward at Mako, where the water level has fallen from 3.37 to 3.29 meters, a drop of 8 centimeters. With an alert level set at 6 meters, the station is 2.71 meters below the threshold.

In Simenti, however, the water level has risen slightly. It reached 4.13 meters compared to 4.11 meters the previous day, an increase of 2 centimeters. Despite this change, the situation remains well below the alert level of 13 meters.

The rise is more pronounced in Gouloumbou, where the water level increased from 3.30 to 3.66 meters, an additional 36 centimeters in 24 hours. Again, no particular alert has been issued, as the level remains at 8.34 meters, below the alert threshold of 12 meters.

In Diaguiri, the water level has receded by 22 centimeters, from 1.42 to 1.20 meters. The difference with the alert level of 6 meters has reached 4.80 meters.

The other stations also show predominantly downward trends. At Thiokoye, the level fell from 1.73 to 1.65 meters, while at Niokolokoba, a much larger drop of 1.82 meters was recorded, with the level settling at 2 meters at 8 a.m.

Green alert maintained

Based on the available readings, the green alert is maintained on the stations concerned, reflecting the absence of any particular hydrological situation requiring an alert.

The summary table thus confirms a contrasting trend across the stations: a decrease in Kédougou, Mako, Diaguiri, Thiokoye, and Niokolokoba, compared to an increase in Simenti and Gouloumbou. However, the levels remain below the alert thresholds communicated for the stations concerned.

At this stage, the Gambia River basin shows no signs of exceeding alert thresholds. Hydrological monitoring continues, however, particularly given the rainy season when water levels can fluctuate rapidly depending on upstream rainfall.
