Fleuve Gambie : les niveaux d’eau restent sous surveillance, mais aucune menace de crue à Kédougou
Kédougou, July 30, 2026 – The latest hydrological observations from the Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade are reassuring. Despite some variations recorded at several measuring stations in the Gambia River basin, no immediate risk of flooding has been reported. All stations remain on green alert, indicating no particular threat to riverside communities.
At the Kédougou station, the river level was measured at 2.38 meters at 8:00 AM this Thursday, compared to 2.61 meters the previous day, representing a drop of 23 centimeters in 24 hours. This level remains well below the alert threshold of 7 meters, with a safety margin of 4.62 meters. Compared to the same period in 2025, the river level also shows a decrease of 91 centimeters.
The downward trend is also evident at several other stations in the basin. At Mako, the water level dropped from 2.80 meters to 2.55 meters (-25 cm), while at Simenti, a more significant decrease of 55 centimeters was observed, with the level reaching 4 meters. At Thiokoye, the water level fell to 1.10 meters, a drop of 9 centimeters in a single day. All these stations remain well below their respective alert thresholds.
Conversely, the Diaguiri station is the only one to record a slight rise. The river level there increased from 4 meters to 4.14 meters, a rise of 14 centimeters in 24 hours. This level, however, remains well below the critical threshold of 12 meters, with a difference of 7.86 meters, thus ruling out any immediate risk of flooding.
Data from the Niokolo Koba and Mako stations were not fully available at the time of publication of the bulletin, but the hydrological services specify that this situation does not call into question the overall assessment of the basin, which remains stable.
According to the summary table in the daily hydrological bulletin, all monitored stations remain under green alert, confirming that no particular vigilance is required at this stage. However, authorities urge riverside communities to remain attentive to the progress of the rainy season and continue daily monitoring of the levels of the Gambia River and its main tributaries.
