Hivernage : la route de Petit Mbao engloutie sous les eaux
In Senegal, the rainy season is often awaited as a blessing for the land. But in some neighborhoods of the Dakar region, the return of the rains brings a very different reality. In Petit Mbao, the scene has become sadly all too familiar with the first downpours. The town's main road transforms into a vast pool of stagnant, muddy water, paralyzing local life and condemning residents and other road users to a veritable obstacle course.
What initially seemed like a temporary inconvenience has, over the weeks, turned into a major structural problem. The lack of adequate drainage and an efficient sewage system means that each new rainfall adds to the accumulated runoff, gradually suffocating this strategic area of the Mbao municipality.
On site, the deterioration of the asphalt and the accumulation of water are having a major impact on mobility and the local economy.
For Ousmane Ndoye, a private driver and daily user of this road, the situation is dire. Every trip has become a source of financial and material anxiety. "At the beginning of the rainy season, we thought it would clear up in a few hours after the rains," he explains, looking worried. "But the situation has only worsened week after week. Today, the road is completely destroyed and hidden under muddy pools," he laments.
Beyond the inconvenience, it's the repair costs that weigh heavily on his daily life. "Last week, I wrecked my ignition system and two shock absorbers driving through here. We pay our taxes and insurance, but we ruin our cars just to get home. If nothing is done immediately, this road will be permanently closed," the driver warns.
The problem also extends to all economic activity in the area. While the water mainly pools on the road used by vehicles, its presence completely blocks access and prevents residents from going about their business freely. It is the roadside businesses that bear the brunt of the consequences.
Fatou Sow, a local resident and shopkeeper, experiences this ordeal daily. From her shop, the scene is alarming: the muddy pool covering the road forms an impassable barrier for shoppers. "We've been living with this accumulated water on the road for weeks now. The situation worsens with every rainfall," she says, disheartened.
Her main concern is the complete shutdown of her business and the unsanitary conditions. "Currently, no customer can cross this water to buy anything, whether from our shops or at the market. Everything is at a standstill. In addition to the lost income, it's a real breeding ground for mosquitoes along the road. At night, it's unbearable," she laments.
Faced with the continued deterioration of their living environment and the stifling of local businesses, residents and users agree on the urgent need for institutional action. Their expectations boil down to concrete and immediate measures:
-Emergency pumping of water accumulated on the roadway since the beginning of the season and rapid clearing of drainage channels.
-A technical rehabilitation of the roadway destroyed by water infiltration to guarantee the safety of users.
-Support for local businesses and mosquito control interventions to clean up the area around this commercial thoroughfare.
As the rainy season continues during this holiday period, the people of Petit Mbao hope for swift action on this major road by the relevant authorities, in order to free up traffic and revive the neighborhood's economy.
