Journée mondiale de l’environnement : Le PNUE appelle à la mobilisation et à la participation citoyenne pour sauver la planète
World Environment Day is celebrated this Friday, June 5, 2026, under the theme: "Climate Action", with the international slogan "Now For Climate".
A global call for climate action
World Environment Day aims to promote environmental protection, essential for human well-being and sustainable development. This year's theme reminds us that there is still time to change course. Indeed, this 2026 edition, for which Azerbaijan was the official host country, highlighted several priorities. These include global mobilization: an urgent call to accelerate the ecological transition and rethink our economic systems in the face of the warning signs of climate change; and citizen participation: concrete measures, going beyond simply reducing emissions, to integrate everyone—citizens, businesses, and communities—as direct agents of change.
The Earth is already speaking to us, through record temperatures, more intense wildfires, extreme storms, and glaciers disappearing before our eyes. For years, experts have said that limiting global warming to 1.5°C is essential to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. Today, that threshold is about to be crossed, and every fraction of a degree matters. And climate change is no longer a distant threat: it is reshaping life across the planet. We must act urgently to address these pressing problems.
According to the United Nations Secretary-General, the last 11 years have been the hottest ever recorded. "The damage goes far beyond rising temperatures: air pollution, soil degradation, ecosystem collapse, and biodiversity loss complete the picture. Health is suffering, homes are being destroyed, and hunger is on the rise," António Guterres emphasized.
He adds: “We must limit the extent, duration and danger of this overshoot, and quickly reverse the rise in temperatures. Emissions must be drastically reduced. It is by accelerating a just transition to a world free from fossil fuels and focused on renewable energies that we can reduce costs and guarantee genuine energy security.”
For Mr. Guterres, reducing methane emissions is one of the fastest and least expensive ways to curb warming in the short term. “We must protect forests, land, and seas, and help people adapt to the devastating consequences that are already being felt. We must also honor the climate finance pledges made to developing countries to save lives, protect livelihoods, and strengthen economies,” the UN Secretary-General concluded.
The need to participate
To address this, collective action is essential to restoring ecosystems. Young people are the driving force behind change, and clean energy is transforming cities and homes.
Time is running out and nature is in a state of emergency. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. If we don't act, exposure to air pollution exceeding safety standards will increase by 50% within the decade, and plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems will triple by around 2040.
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on June 5 since 1973, World Environment Day is the world’s largest platform for raising public awareness about the environment and is celebrated by millions of people around the world.
