Le fleuve Sénégal amorce sa décrue
The receding of the floodwaters is confirmed in the upper Senegal River basin. According to the bulletin from the Saint-Louis water resources brigade published this Thursday, levels are falling in Bakel and Kidira, while the situation remains stable further downstream.
At Bakel, the point where the river enters Senegal, the water level dropped 13 cm in 24 hours. The gauge read 5.42 m this Thursday at 8 a.m., compared to 5.55 m the previous day. The difference is even more pronounced compared to 2025: on the same date last year, the river reached a peak of 8.48 m.
On the Falémé River, at Kidira, the trend is the same. The water level has dropped to 3.48 m, a decrease of 12 cm. A year ago, it was almost double that at 6.67 m.
Further downstream, the variations are less pronounced. At Matam, the river rose by 7 cm, reaching 5.52 m. At Podor and Richard-Toll, the levels remained unchanged at 3.66 m and 2.77 m respectively. All these stations remain well below the alert levels set at 8 m, 5 m, and 3.35 m.
At the river mouth, Saint-Louis is not threatened. The river level there is stagnant at 1.10 m, compared to the alert threshold of 1.75 m. To protect the city, the managers of the Diama dam have taken preventative measures. The upstream level has been lowered to 2 m and the flow rate reduced to 1,085 m³/s, compared to 1,505 m³/s projected for 2025. The objective is to "prepare for the passage of the flood without major consequences for Saint-Louis."
The same situation is observed at the Manantali dam. The reservoir level is 201.69 m, which is more than 5 m lower than in September 2025.
For the time being, no station in the basin exceeds the alert threshold.
