Transportation scam: To finance her hashish habit, she repeatedly scammed taxi drivers

Filouterie de transport : Pour financer sa consommation de haschich, elle multipliait les arnaques auprès de taximen

A mother of two, under 30 years old, N. Sarr admitted in court to using money she had swindled from taxi drivers to buy hashish. Behind this case of petty fraud lies a more troubling reality: that of young adults, sometimes parents, whose drug use fuels criminal behavior. A few weeks ago, the Mbour High Court heard a similar case. T. Senghor, a young mother, had defrauded several taxi drivers to obtain drugs.

These two cases of transport fraud go beyond simple swindling. Through the story of this young woman under 30, a mother of two, a deeper reality has entered the courtroom: the devastating effects of drug use on a segment of youth.

According to the proceedings, the defendant deceived at least two drivers by promising them payments that were never made. From one of them, she even borrowed 10,000 CFA francs along the way, before making him believe that the money had been transferred to his phone.

When questioned by the prosecutor about the money's whereabouts, she initially tried to conceal the truth, claiming she had given it to a friend to make a purchase. Pressed to answer, she finally admitted that the money had been used to buy hashish.

This confession added another dimension to the case. It highlights the potential link between drug addiction and criminal activity. Investigators also indicated that they had received several complaints against the young woman for similar offenses, suggesting a pattern of repeated behavior.

While each case involves an individual situation, Prosecutor Camara notes that some property offenses are committed to finance drug use.

This case is a reminder of the social consequences of addiction, which can lead some young adults, including parents, to become trapped in a spiral of dependence, lies and fraud.

At the end of the trial, the court sentenced N. Sarr to three months in prison with a suspended sentence, while his lawyer pleaded for leniency, citing his state of health and family situation.

Maitre Rama Ba, moved to tears by her client's situation, pledged to reimburse the taxi driver 10,000 CFA francs.
