«Ma fille de trois ans se grattait le sexe» : l’imam de 69 ans passe quatre ans en prison… pour rien
The imam of the Asecna neighborhood, Mr. Camara, known as "Oustaz," was acquitted this Tuesday by the Dakar Criminal Court. Aged 69, he was being prosecuted for pedophilia and the abduction of a minor, a 3-year-old girl with whom he shared a home. Les Échos reports that he had been incarcerated since May 24, 2022.
According to the newspaper, the case began in February 2022 when the child's mother, FB Diatta, contacted the police after noticing that her daughter was "scratching her genitals," behavior she considered unusual. The child then identified the imam as the perpetrator of the alleged inappropriate touching.
A medical examination revealed bruising on the girl's genitals, while specifying that her hymen was intact. During the investigation, the minor also provided a detailed description of the accused's room, including the presence of a television, a bed, and copies of the Quran—details confirmed by a search conducted by the gendarmerie.
Throughout the proceedings, the same source continues, Mr. Camara firmly denied the accusations. In court, he maintained that he was the victim of a conspiracy aimed, in his view, at removing him from the leadership of the mosque in favor of another imam. His version of events was corroborated by the testimony of a cousin, who stated that he had spent the entire day of February 24, 2022, in his company, without seeing any children nearby. The newspaper also notes that neither the mother nor the young girl appeared in court to support their accusations.
The prosecutor requested a guilty verdict for the accused on charges of pedophilia and abduction of a minor, while leaving the sentencing to the court's discretion. Defense attorneys François Kandjiack Senghor and Daff argued that the case lacked any tangible evidence. At the conclusion of the proceedings, the criminal court acquitted the Imam, thus ending four years of pretrial detention.
