September 22, 2017 - September 22, 2026: Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Al-Amine - 9 years already!

Before his accession to the Caliphate in March 2017, he had left his mark for decades as a mediator, social regulator and respected advisor, both within his religious community and in Senegalese society in general.

Eight years after his passing on September 22, 2017, the memory of the late Khalif General of the Tijaniyya, Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy “Al Amine,” remains vivid in the minds and hearts of the Tijaniyya faithful. His constant concern for peace, consensus, and brotherhood made him a respected voice.

His nickname “Al Amine”, which means “the trustworthy one” in Arabic, a term by which the Meccans referred to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), summed up his personality, characterized by rigor, humility and fidelity to his word.

Having become the general Khalif of the Tidianes after the passing of his older brother Serigne Cheikh Tidiane Sy “Al Maktoum”, the son of the first Khalif of Maodo, Cheikh Al Seydi Khalifa Aboubacar Sy Malick (RTA), and of Sokhna Astou Kane, born in 1928 in Tivaouane, had distinguished himself very early on by his mastery of Islamic sciences and his high sense of righteousness.

Serigne Abdou served as Caliph for only six months, until his passing on September 22, 2017, at the age of 89. His Caliphate, rich in symbolism, will remain etched in the history of the brotherhood and the country. Among his teachings that have remained in the collective memory, he often reminded us: “Peace is the condition of all progress, and a promise is a sacred pact that binds its author before God and before humankind.”

Eight years later, Tivaouane and the Islamic Ummah pay tribute to a man of God of exceptional stature, who embodied peace, trust, and the continuity of the spiritual legacy of El Hadj Malick Sy. A spiritual guide whose life continues to inspire and serve as a moral compass for an entire generation.
