8 ans après sa disparition : Bruno Diatta, le maître de l’ombre qui a servi quatre présidents
It was September 21, 2018! Senegal lost one of its greatest public servants, the man who knew all the secrets of the Palace. Bruno Diatta passed away at the age of 69, after having dedicated a large part of his life to the workings of the Presidency of the Republic.
Eight years after his passing, the memory of this emblematic figure of presidential protocol remains deeply ingrained in Senegal's institutional memory. With unwavering commitment—characterized by discretion, rigor, and loyalty to the Republic—he dedicated nearly four decades to serving the State, alongside four Presidents of the Republic.
Born in Saint-Louis on October 22, 1948, Bruno Diatta entered the National School of Administration (ENA), from which he graduated top of his class in 1973. A few years later, in June 1978, he entered the Palace of the Republic before taking over the presidential protocol in 1979.
For nearly forty years, he occupied a particularly strategic position, while remaining in the shadows. From Léopold Sédar Senghor to Macky Sall, via Abdou Diouf and Abdoulaye Wade, Bruno Diatta accompanied four Senegalese heads of state, navigating political transitions without ever deviating from his duty of discretion.
Organization of official ceremonies, presidential trips, reception of heads of state and foreign delegations, international summits: nothing seemed to escape the vigilance of the man who had become a true reference in state protocol, making discretion his trademark.
Beyond his professional skills, it was above all his legendary discretion that left its mark on several generations of political and administrative leaders. He knew the inner workings of the state and the secrets of the various regimes, but he never made it a subject of public discourse. This stance earned him the unanimous respect of the political class and the administration.
Until his very last breath, this great servant of the Republic remained faithful to his mission, embodying a "statesman in all his fullness." On September 19, 2018, just two days before his passing, he was still presiding over the installation of the Council of Ministers. His sudden death, which occurred at his home in Dakar on September 21, 2018, deeply affected the state apparatus, as he was scheduled to accompany President Macky Sall to Bamako for the inauguration of Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.
Eight years after his passing, the name of Bruno Diatta remains inextricably linked to public service and state protocol. His legacy now extends beyond his career alone: the Council of Ministers chamber now bears his name, as does the Grand Amphitheater of the National School of Administration.
