Ndiassane : Baye Bou Kounta, vingt ans après, l’héritage d’un serviteur de l’islam
In Ndiassane, the 20th edition of the "Gamouwaat," celebrated this Saturday, September 12, 2026, is an opportunity to revisit the life of Cheikh Bou Mouhamed Kounta, better known as Baye Bou. Twenty years after his passing, his work continues to influence the religious city and the communities that benefited from his teachings.
The younger son of Sheikh Bou Mouhamed Kounta, founder of Ndiassane, Baye Bou was born a few days after the death of his father in 1914. He grew up under the protection of his mother, Sokhna Codou Diène, from the family of Diène Manka.
From a very young age, he gravitated towards religious studies. At the age of seven, in 1921, he went to Mauritania to study the Quran and Islamic sciences. There, he memorized the entire holy book and deepened his religious knowledge.
Upon returning to Ndiassane, he dedicated himself to serving his brother, Sheikh Sidy Lamine Kounta. He became his spokesperson, imam, and Quran teacher. Through these roles, he contributed to the transmission of religious knowledge and the consolidation of the Kounta family legacy.
From Saloum to the sub-region
In 1942, Baye Bou settled in Thiarack Saré Ghatty, in the Saloum region, between Kaolack and Ndoffane. There, he embarked on a major mission to spread Islam. For several years, he traveled throughout the villages and remote areas of the Sine-Saloum to provide religious instruction. He contributed to the construction of mosques and daaras (Koranic schools) and made religious education one of the cornerstones of his work.
But his commitment wasn't limited to preaching. Baye Bou placed great importance on social action. He provided support to the poor and showed particular concern for orphans and children. This close connection with the people led him to be considered a true protector of the most vulnerable.
A Caliph devoted to knowledge and education
In 1987, Baye Bou Kounta became the Caliph General of the Khadres of Senegal. He continued the work of his predecessors, emphasizing religion, education, and the transmission of knowledge. During his caliphate, he also worked to develop religious and educational infrastructure. Mosques, daaras (Koranic schools), and educational facilities were developed as part of this policy.
Baye Bou also distinguished himself through his openness to modern education. He notably contributed to the introduction of French education in Ndiassane, with the aim of enabling younger generations to acquire both religious training and academic knowledge. This approach is further developed with the Al-Kountiyou Islamic Institute in Ndiassane, which is based on a bilingual approach.
An international reach
Baye Bou Kounta's influence extends beyond the borders of Senegal. He makes several trips in the sub-region, notably to Mali, Gambia and Mauritania, to meet with the faithful and Muslim communities.
He also travels to Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and France. These trips contribute to spreading his message and strengthening ties between Ndiassane and the Khadre communities established abroad.
Alongside his religious commitment, Baye Bou places importance on productive activities, particularly agriculture. For him, faith and knowledge must also be accompanied by a culture of work and self-reliance.
April 29, 2006: Ndiassane loses Baye Bou
On April 29, 2006, Sheikh Bou Mouhamed Kounta passed away at the advanced age of 91. His death occurred a few days after the Gamou of Ndiassane, during the period corresponding to the Gamouwaat. Since then, this event has become an important gathering for commemoration, prayer, and the transmission of his teachings.
After his passing, his first successor, Serigne Sidy Mokhtar Kounta, committed himself to revitalizing the Gamouwaat and preserving the legacy left by Baye Bou.
In 2023, he passed the torch to his brother, Serigne Mouhamed Kounta, who continued this mission.
The Association for the Renaissance of the Teachings of Sheikh Bou Mouhamed Kounta (APRECH.), led in particular by young professionals, also participates in the perpetuation of this legacy.
A legacy that lives on
For this 20th edition of "Gamouwaat", Ndiassane remembers a man whose life was marked by the Quran, teaching, preaching and social action.
Twenty years after his passing, Baye Bou Kounta remains present through the daaras, the mosques, the educational and social initiatives, as well as the generations he helped to educate.
Beyond commemoration, the "Gamouwaat" thus appears as a moment of transmission of a heritage based on faith, knowledge, work and service to the people.
