Émigration irrégulière : Six jeunes originaires de Dahra périssent au large de la Mauritanie
The tragic series of tragedies linked to irregular migration continues to plague Senegal. A year after the tragic deaths of five young people from the villages of Mbaye Awa, Gang, Linguère, and Dahra in a pirogue capsizing bound for Spain, the Djolof region has once again been dealt a devastating blow. This week, six more young people from Dahra lost their lives at sea in horrific circumstances.
According to our information, the makeshift canoe had set sail from the Gambian coast, heading for the Canary Islands. After several weeks of a harrowing drift on the high seas, the vessel finally capsized off the coast of Mauritania.
The provisional death toll from this latest maritime tragedy is particularly high. Rescuers have managed to save 37 survivors, but nearly 150 people remain missing. Among the deceased are the six young people from Dahra, including three shopkeepers, two laborers, and a homemaker, all of whom had set out in search of a better future.
In Dahra, the shockwave is immense. The families of the victims, deeply affected by this tragedy, have begun organizing religious ceremonies and funerals. The dream of these young people to set foot on European soil has once again been shattered in the middle of the ocean.
