Gambie : Une pirogue de migrants partie de Mbour secourue en mer après plus d’une semaine de dérive
Illegal emigration nearly turned tragic off the coast of West Africa. Ninety-four (94) people attempting irregular migration, including 14 minors, were rescued on Friday, October 9, off the coast of Tanji, Gambia. They had been at sea for over a week after leaving Mbour, Senegal, hoping to reach the Canary Islands.
The rescue operation was successfully carried out by the Gambian Navy, which rescued the 94 passengers found adrift.
According to information officially released by the Gambian authorities, the group consists of 88 Gambians, 3 Senegalese, 2 Bissau-Guineans, and one Guinean. All 94 people rescued are male.
A perilous crossing on the Atlantic route
According to testimonies gathered from survivors, their journey began in Mbour, on the Petite-Côte of Senegal. Their goal was to reach the Spanish Canary Islands by taking the perilous Atlantic migration route.
But the crossing quickly turned into an ordeal. The would-be migrants spent more than a week at sea, drifting along the Senegalese and Gambian coasts, before being located, lost and immobilized, several miles off the coast of Tanji.
After their rescue, the 94 migrants were taken into custody and transported to the Immigration Department's Training School detention center. They are being held there while authorities continue their investigation to determine the exact circumstances of their journey and identify those who organized the attempted crossing.
