The surge in migrant departures from the West African coast has brought the question of opportunities for Senegalese youth back to the forefront of the debate. Despite the rhetoric and initiatives announced to promote youth employment, many continue to look to Europe as an alternative to their daily struggles.
The lack of job opportunities, difficulties integrating into the workforce, and the absence of sufficiently encouraging prospects fuel despair among some young people. For some considering leaving, taking to the sea then appears as an attempt to change their lives, despite the considerable risks of a crossing to Spain.
Adding to this situation is the influence of social media. Videos shared by migrants who have successfully made the crossing show scenes of joy, smiles, and an apparently warm welcome upon their arrival in Europe, particularly in reception centers. These widely shared images can give a partial and sometimes misleading view of the reality of migration.
By highlighting arrival and the initial moments spent in Europe, this content largely ignores the dangers of the crossing, shipwrecks, disappearances at sea, administrative hurdles, and the living conditions some migrants face after arrival. This can foster hope for a quick success and encourage other young people to attempt the perilous journey.
Faced with this dynamic, the question of political responses remains central. Beyond announcements and support programs, the challenge is to offer concrete and sustainable solutions in terms of employment, vocational training, entrepreneurship, and access to financing. The objective is to enable young people to build their future in Senegal without seeing irregular migration as their only way out.
However, the fight against irregular migration cannot be limited to awareness campaigns or increased controls. It also requires addressing the economic and social factors that drive some young people to risk their lives at sea.
As long as local prospects remain insufficient in the eyes of some young people, images of a Europe presented as an Eldorado will continue to fuel dreams of leaving, at the risk of new migratory tragedies.

WAKE UP, pauvre Noir !
