Migration irrégulière : 112 migrants partis de la Gambie débarquent à El Hierro, 4 morts dénombrés
The journey to the Canary Islands turned into a tragedy. After eight days at sea, 112 migrants who had departed from The Gambia were rescued in the early hours of Friday morning, around 2:30 a.m., 26 miles south of the island of El Hierro, by the rescue ship "Salvamar Navia." Upon arrival at the port of La Restinga, two lifeless bodies were discovered on board the vessel: a young man and a baby.
According to survivor accounts, two other passengers died during the crossing, and their bodies were thrown into the sea. This could bring the death toll to four. Among the survivors, a one-year-old girl was in critical condition. She was airlifted to a hospital.
The group was mostly composed of men, but also included eight women and eight minors, all of African origin. The survivors were taken in charge by the Red Cross, the Civil Guard, and the police before being transferred to a reception center.
This latest tragedy illustrates once again the deadly dangers of illegal migration.
