A pirogue carrying 125 migrants landed this Sunday around noon at the port of La Restinga, on the Spanish island of El Hierro, in the Canary Islands archipelago, coming from Brufut, in Gambia.

The group is composed of Senegalese, Gambian and Guinean nationals. Among the passengers are 11 women and five minors, according to emergency and rescue services sources.

The migrants received assistance from the Spanish Red Cross and rescue teams. Everyone was doing well.

This landing comes amid a surge in migrant arrivals in the Canary Islands. According to reports, more than 1,500 migrants have reached Spain in the past week, aboard some twenty boats.
