Migration irrégulière : Les pirogues se multiplient, le gouvernement reste silencieux
Departures are increasing, interceptions at sea are becoming more frequent, and migrant tragedies continue to be reported on the Atlantic routes. Yet, faced with this surge in attempts at irregular migration to Spain, communication from the Senegalese authorities remains particularly anticipated.
For several months, migrant boats have been increasing off the coast of West Africa. Almost every day, new arrivals are reported in the Spanish Canary Islands, while other boats are intercepted at sea by security forces. A significant portion of these departures originate from the coasts of Senegal and Gambia, with many Senegalese nationals on board.
Field data published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for April and May 2026 show that the phenomenon remains very active. During this period, monitoring teams recorded eight migrant departures and one boat sighted on the high seas, involving a total of 1,475 people. They also reported 880 people involved in preparations for departure.

Over the same period, 1,544 migrants arrived by sea in the Canary Islands, compared to 1,559 in April and May 2025, representing a slight decrease of 1%. This data shows that, despite the decline recorded in certain periods, the departure networks and preparations for crossings remain highly structured.
Behind these figures lies a worrying reality: that of thousands of people willing to brave the dangers of the Atlantic in the hope of reaching Europe. A perilous crossing, marked by the constant risk of shipwreck, disappearances at sea, and heavy loss of life.
A series of tragedies, but no answers about the fate of the Senegalese
In recent days, migrant tragedies have also been reported in Gambia, Mauritania, and other departure and transit areas. Search operations and the discovery of bodies are fueling concerns about the fate of those attempting to emigrate.
But one question remains: are Senegalese among the victims and missing persons? In the absence of sufficiently precise official information, it remains difficult to establish their possible involvement in these tragedies.
This uncertainty intensifies the questions and distress of families who remain without news of their loved ones lost at sea. It also underscores the urgent need for coordination among the countries involved to identify victims, inform families, and establish reliable figures.
An official silence that raises questions
Faced with the repeated departures, interceptions and tragedies, the lack of clearly identifiable government communication on the recent scale of the phenomenon and on the fate of any Senegalese nationals raises serious questions.
What measures do the authorities intend to take to curb departures? What support is planned for families without news of their loved ones? Have cooperation mechanisms been strengthened with the Gambian, Mauritanian, and Spanish authorities to better document shipwrecks and disappearances?
These are all questions that demand public answers. Because beyond the statistics on arrivals in Spain and interceptions at sea, irregular migration remains a major human, social and security issue.
The silence of the authorities does not, in itself, allow us to conclude that the State has failed to act. But in a context where departures seem to be continuing at a sustained pace, regular, transparent, and documented communication appears more essential than ever.
