Sokone : La gendarmerie intercepte 44 migrants présumés en route vers la Gambie
New operation by the national gendarmerie against migrant trafficking networks. On the night of August 18, 2026, the gendarmes of the Sokone brigade, under the command of Commander Ndiaye, intercepted a group of 44 suspected migrants who were believed to be heading to Gambia.
According to the initial findings of the investigation, these would-be irregular migrants planned to reach the Spanish coast from Gambian territory.
Alerted as part of their surveillance operation, the gendarmes from the Sokone brigade managed to intercept the group before they crossed the Gambian border. Those apprehended were taken to the brigade where an investigation has been launched to trace the organizers and any smugglers involved in this suspected migrant trafficking network between Senegal and The Gambia.
The investigations will also help determine the exact circumstances of the departure, the identity of any potential couriers, and the various ramifications of this alleged network.
This latest interception comes as Senegalese authorities step up their fight against networks that organize or facilitate clandestine departures of migrants to Europe.
