JOJ Dakar 2026 : Dr Cheikh Tidiane Dièye visite les travaux d'assainissement en cours de finition
As part of flood prevention and management efforts, and in preparation for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the Minister of Water and Sanitation visited ongoing construction sites in the Dakar department this Saturday. Accompanied by the Prefect of Dakar, the Director General of the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS) and his team, as well as representatives from Ageroute (the Senegalese road agency), Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye visited, in turn, 22nd Street in the Medina district, the Gueule Tapée canal, Point E, the Place du Souvenir Africain (African Remembrance Square) on the western coast, and the stormwater retention basin in the catchment area. On site, the Minister personally observed the progress of the work and the obstacles hindering the companies responsible for the projects.
Five strategic sites visited
This visit, dedicated to flood prevention and management, in the perspective of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, took place according to an agenda which was drawn up by the governor of the Dakar region, in consultation with operational structures as well as the competent administrative and territorial authorities.
On Rue 22 in the Medina, work is underway on the ONAS (National Sanitation Office) wastewater network, which must be connected to the Gueule Tapée canal before the road is paved by Ageroute (the national road agency). Here, the minister observed the progress of the work as well as the obstacles delaying the project's completion. He instructed the prefect and the Director General of ONAS to do everything possible to ensure the work is finished as soon as possible (before the end of the month).
At Point E, the minister visited all the ongoing sanitation works around the Olympic swimming pool, particularly on Fatick and Louga streets. Here too, the construction sites are in their final stages but are held up by some constraints related to the ONAS wastewater network.
At the Place du Souvenir Africain (African Remembrance Square), Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye visited the site of the ongoing upgrades to the stormwater drainage system around the Olympic swimming pool and the western waterfront. There, the Director General of ONAS (National Sanitation Office) also reassured the Minister regarding the risk of flooding.
The Minister of Water and Sanitation concluded his visit at the water catchment area. There, Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye first visited the retention basin, a key component of the ONAS pumping system. This basin has a storage capacity of 250,000 m³ and a pumping capacity of up to 9,000 m³/hour.
With the heavy rains that Dakar recorded on the night of October 5-6, the basin was submerged by waters, causing massive flooding throughout the neighborhood.
That is why the minister also took advantage of his visit to see if the waters had been completely evacuated from the flooded houses, and to meet with the residents to express his compassion.
