Élections américaines : premières historiques pour des élus issus de minorités
The midterm elections in the United States on Tuesday shattered the Republican majority and some glass ceilings, bringing Democrats from minority backgrounds into top positions.
An overview of these unprecedented victories.
Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected governor of Georgia, becoming the first Black woman to hold that position in the United States.
On her campaign website, she presents herself as a descendant of a family of slaves from a plantation in Georgia, a state in the heart of the Deep South marked by slavery, segregation and then the fight for civil rights.
She had led the city hall of Atlanta, the largest city in the state, between 2018 and 2022.
Deb Haaland, a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, became the first Native American woman to rise to the position of governor, in New Mexico (southwest).
She had already made history as the first Native American woman to hold a ministerial portfolio when she became Secretary of State for Federal Lands under former President Joe Biden.
In the north of the country, in Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan also crossed a symbolic threshold by becoming the first Native American woman to be elected to the Senate. She was previously the state's vice-governor.
Abdul El-Sayed, from the left wing of the Democratic party, won the Senate election in Michigan (north).
This doctor, the son of Egyptian immigrants, would thus become the first Muslim senator in the United States.
During the campaign, Donald Trump and his supporters intensified their attacks against him, accusing him and his family of having ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and the jihadist organization Al-Qaeda. Referring to him as "Mohammed," the American president labeled him a "terrorist sympathizer."
"To all the children who watched this last month, and to all the parents who struggled to explain why the president openly mocked someone because of their name or the way they pray, tell them tomorrow that the bad guys lost," the 40-year-old said in his victory speech.
A fierce critic of American support for Israel, Abdul El-Sayed also aroused hostility from part of the Jewish community, in a state that also has one of the largest Arab-American populations in the country.
Chris Pappas, elected in New Hampshire (northeast), becomes the first openly gay senator.
Aged 46, from a Greek-American family known in the state for operating a chain of restaurants, Chris Pappas had served in the House of Representatives since January 2019.
As a congressman, he distinguished himself in particular by his support for the Equality Act, the major Democratic bill aimed at enshrining in federal law protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
After his victory, he appeared on stage with the man he described as his "fantastic husband".
The current leader of the Democratic representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, is expected to take the chair after his party's landslide victory.
He would thus become the first African American to preside over the House of Representatives.
Florida (southeast) has elected a black governor for the first time in its history, Republican Byron Donalds.
On the other side of the country, California elected Democrat Xavier Becerra as governor, the first Hispanic to win the most populous of the American states.
These election results reflect "a massive rejection of hatred and division," Bill Shiebler, director of strategy for the citizen association State Voices, told AFP.
"These new leaders don't emerge overnight," he emphasized. "They come from communities that organize themselves between elections."
