En campagne pour les démocrates, Obama s'attaque à Trump avec virulence
Former US President Barack Obama returned to the campaign trail on Saturday with a rally in Ohio to support Democratic candidates in the November 3 midterm elections, delivering a scathing critique of Donald Trump at the same time.
"After two years of chaos, cruelty, corruption, and incompetence unlike anything seen in the modern era, you have a chance to say, 'Enough is enough. We are voting for change here in Ohio,'" he said in Cleveland.
The 65-year-old Democrat has sharply criticized his successor in the White House, whose government he believes is directly responsible for the rising cost of living.
"The current president has chosen to make a series of bad decisions. Above all, he has decided to start an unnecessary war, which no one asked for," he asserted.
Barack Obama also urged those in attendance to cast their ballots as soon as possible, since early voting is already open in this northern industrial state.
"Don't procrastinate, don't shirk your responsibilities," Barack Obama declared.
The former president retains a certain popularity among the Democratic base, which he is keen to use in support of his party's candidates for the decisive elections to come.
In Ohio, former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown will attempt to make his comeback against incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted, while the governorship will be contested between Democrat Amy Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, a former candidate in the 2024 presidential primaries.
Polls give Democrats a slight lead in both races, but the results are expected to be close.
After Cleveland, Barack Obama will head north to Michigan in the evening for a rally in Detroit alongside Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for Senate.
In this city with a large African-American population, the first black president in the history of the United States was called in to mobilize the electorate in favor of this 41-year-old epidemiologist.
While both Michigan Senate seats are currently held by Democrats, Abdul El-Sayed, from the left wing of the party, faces polls showing him neck and neck with Republican Mike Rogers.
"Obama was a grossly incompetent president!", Donald Trump reacted on Sunday on his Truth Social network.
"He poured billions of dollars into Iran and paved the way for its nuclear weapons," he said, referring to an agreement signed between Washington and Tehran in 2015, when Mr. Obama was president, which eased sanctions against Iran in exchange for a drastic reduction in its nuclear activities.
During his first term, Mr. Trump withdrew from this agreement and imposed sanctions, including against countries that bought Iranian oil.
