États-Unis: la Cour suprême autorise la révocation du statut de protection temporaire des réfugiés haïtiens
The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday, June 25, 2026, granted a victory to the Trump administration, authorizing it to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS), the status that allowed more than 350,000 Haitian nationals to reside legally in the United States. These individuals are now at the mercy of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which can deport them to Haiti at any time.
In the United States, 350,000 Haitians could now be deported by the Trump administration. The situation had been very uncertain for months. Upon taking office, US President Donald Trump ended other similar protection programs for Venezuelans, for example, and he was determined to do the same for Haitians' Temporary Protected Status (TPS), reports our correspondent in New York, Loubna Anaki.
The Supreme Court issued its decision by a vote of six to three, with all six justices voting in favor of the ultra-conservative wing. Technically, the justices did not rule in favor of the Trump administration; they determined that the law does not allow the judiciary to review its decisions regarding Temporary Protected Status.
This is therefore a victory for Donald Trump and a major blow for hundreds of thousands of Haitians who could find themselves undocumented overnight, barred from working. Many questions remain, for example, for Haitians who have had children in the United States: their children are American citizens. Are their parents still at risk of deportation?
Above all, the security situation in Haiti remains difficult. Moreover, the plaintiffs who had appealed to the Supreme Court reacted by saying that this decision endangers thousands of people who fled Haiti seeking safety.
