France : une candidate à la présidentielle accouche pendant la campagne, une première
French Green Party leader and presidential candidate Marine Tondelier gave birth to a baby boy, she told AFP on Wednesday, adding that she fully intended to continue campaigning while looking after her newborn.
Marine Tondelier, 40, the first presidential candidate to campaign while pregnant, gave birth on Friday in Lens (northern France) to a little boy named Léon, but waited a few days to announce the news.
The leader of the Greens gave birth a few hours after attending a meeting between President Emmanuel Macron and party leaders to discuss international conflicts and their consequences.
The delivery went "very well," she told AFP, stressing that she would be "working differently" for a while and "trying to figure out how to reconcile a presidential campaign with a newborn, whose health and well-being take priority."
Already a mother of a 7-year-old boy, Marine Tondelier was officially nominated as the Green Party candidate on Monday. She will remain in that position until the party members vote in December, when they will decide whether to maintain her independent candidacy or withdraw in favor of another left-wing candidate.
The latest polls give Marine Tondelier a score of between 3.5 and 5.5% in the first round of the presidential election, scheduled for April 2027.
Determined to resume her activities, the environmentalist plans to participate in a video press conference this Wednesday to give an update on her presidential campaign, and intends to march on Saturday in a climate march, if her health and that of her baby allow it.
When she announced her pregnancy at the end of March, she recounted her difficulties following a miscarriage and an unsuccessful course of fertility treatments and IVF. It was only after putting her plans for a child on hold that she finally became pregnant.
The environmentalist intends to use the campaign to advocate for reproductive health and to talk about topics such as infertility or the difficulties some women face after childbirth.
