Guerre au Moyen-Orient: la stratégie navale de la France pour le détroit d'Ormuz
The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which transited the Suez Canal on Wednesday, May 6, is heading towards the Persian Gulf region. This is a "signal" indicating that the coalition formed by London and Paris is ready to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
France is proposing to the United States and Iran to "deal with the issue of Hormuz separately" from the rest of the conflict and negotiations, because "it is of common interest" and is proposing to launch a multinational mission to secure this highly strategic stretch of sea.
The solution to the conflict will come neither from the United States nor from Iran, so the belligerents must be allowed to save face, according to sources in Paris. The alternative, or third way, could revolve around the French aircraft carrier. The Charles de Gaulle is naturally a force aggregator and is always accompanied by a frigate escort.
Onboard headquarters
This naval air group also has an embarked headquarters. Comprising some 80 people headed by an admiral, it is therefore well-equipped to plan and conduct such a deconfliction operation, and it can accommodate liaison officers.
These security operations are, in fact, well known to French sailors. In 1988, with Operation Prometheus, the French naval air group had already secured the Strait of Hormuz. And more recently, in the Red Sea, Operation Aspides, under the auspices of the European Union, helped protect maritime traffic.
To build this coalition, modeled on the "Coalition of the Will" for Ukraine, the British Admiralty is working closely with the French military command in Paris. The Netherlands and Italy, which have frigates in the Indian Ocean, could easily join the operation. Japan has also expressed interest, while India has not responded to requests.
This naval operation, which is expected to be long-term, has no connection to the United States and will not constitute a militarization of the strait, the military insists. "We will not create reassurance through force," the sailors say, clarifying that they will not escort civilian vessels, but rather accompany them through the Strait of Hormuz.
Words have meaning; from a legal point of view, escorting them would make them belligerents.
