A look back at the events that marked the night of Friday, August 28, to Saturday, August 29, 2026.
A Russian drone strike triggered a major fire and explosions Friday evening at a warehouse containing explosives on the outskirts of Kyiv, prompting the evacuation of more than 200 people, authorities said. Prosecutors have opened an investigation into "negligence" regarding storage conditions following the attack, which occurred shortly after 8 p.m. (5 p.m. GMT) in the village of Myla, in the Butcha district.
According to the head of the regional military administration, Timur Tkachenko, a fire broke out and was "accompanied by explosions." "More than 200 people, including children, have already been evacuated from the scene," he stated overnight on Telegram, reporting six injuries.
The prosecutor's office specified that its investigation would focus in particular on "the legality [...] of the storage of explosives" on site, as well as the possession by the company concerned, which was not named, of the necessary authorizations.
Prime Minister Sergei Koretsky lamented that "lessons" had not been learned after a previous deadly attack in July on an ammunition depot in the town of Vyshneve, near Kyiv. The investigation had uncovered significant shortcomings on the part of the state-owned company that owned the depot, which failed to comply with safety standards despite its proximity to residential areas.
“Repeating the same mistakes over and over again, in the fifth year of the large-scale invasion, amounts to criminal negligence,” he denounced on Telegram, before adding that “all those responsible, without exception, must be severely punished so that such situations never happen again.”
1,000 drones per day
Russia and Ukraine have been escalating their long-range airstrikes for several months, increasingly targeting civilian infrastructure such as logistics warehouses, oil facilities, and port sites. These attacks are resulting in a growing number of civilian casualties.
