La coalition menée par Ryad accuse les Houthis d'avoir lancé un drone sur La Mecque
The Saudi-led military coalition claimed on Wednesday to have destroyed a drone launched by the Houthis of Yemen towards the holy city of Mecca, a claim denied by the pro-Iranian rebels.
"On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone launched by the Houthi terrorist militia before it entered the restricted airspace of the holy capital," the coalition wrote in a statement. "The drone was intercepted south of the city of Mecca," it added.
Coalition spokesman General Turki Al-Maliki denounced in the statement "desperate attempts by the militia and its allies to disrupt security and stability and endanger the guests of the Holy Mosque, citizens and residents".
"The accusations concerning the alleged targeting of Mecca are a tired lie, already used before, which no longer fools anyone," responded Houthi official Hazm al-Assad on X.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for its part condemned "the heinous attacks perpetrated by the Houthi group against the city of Mecca and the Medina region, as well as its continued aggression against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia".
These attacks "profane the sanctity of holy places and mosques, and offend the feelings of Muslims around the world," the bloc of countries lamented in a statement.
On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia briefly triggered air alerts in several areas of the south of the country, near the border with Yemen, including one for Mecca, a first since the start of the regional conflict.
Yemen, a neighboring country of Saudi Arabia, was drawn into this conflict in July, triggered by the American-Israeli offensive against Iran at the end of February.
In early September, the Houthis launched a major offensive and seized control of the entire Yemeni coastline on the Red Sea, including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which controls this strategic axis for maritime traffic.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, for his part, claimed that Saudi armed forces had carried out "52 airstrikes" in the past 24 hours targeting "civilian infrastructure" in several governorates, and promised that they would not go "unanswered".
