La députée américaine Ilhan Omar répond à l’allégation que son ex-mari est son frère
United States Representative Ilhan Omar has responded to allegations that she married her brother, stating that she does not know if the claim is true.
"Not to my knowledge," Omar said when MS NOW host Chris Hayes asked him if there was a "weird kernel of truth" in the allegation during an interview.
The question refers to long-standing allegations that Omar married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, to help him obtain U.S. immigration status. Omar has been subjected to repeated scrutiny regarding these allegations, which she has denied.
The 10-year-old allegations originated from a "Somali blog," Omar explained in his first interview since federal agents raided his Washington, DC, home last week.
"Someone put in there that, you know, he must have been my brother or something to that effect," the Minnesota Democrat said.
According to Omar, the bloggers "went around and found random people who were like... 'She introduced him to us and said he was her brother,' which is, you know, crazy."
Omar later described herself as "working class" and living "paycheck to paycheck" when questioned about her current financial situation in light of documents where Omar suggested she and her husband had a combined net worth of approximately $30 million, which she later claimed was a mistake and revised downward.
"I have a 2016 Toyota Camry. It's our only car. I rent my house in DC and my house in Minneapolis, and so I mean, I don't know, it doesn't look like the majority of Congress, but there are some of us who don't come from wealth and don't have wealth," she told Hayes.
The interview comes after federal agents raided Omar DC's home in Washington on October 12 as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
The investigation would focus on whether Omar or his late father provided false information on immigration documents when his family arrived in the United States as refugees from Somalia in 1995, or during the process that led to them becoming U.S. citizens in 2000.
According to Reuters, the search warrant listed potential offenses, including conspiracy, immigration fraud, and false statements on immigration documents.
The investigation is being conducted by federal authorities, including Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative branch of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Associated Press also reported that investigators seized Omar's phone and issued grand jury subpoenas to some of his relatives as part of the investigation.
Omar, a Democratic congresswoman representing Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, has strongly denied wrongdoing and accused the administration of using federal law enforcement to target political opponents.
