L'Arabie saoudite exécute cinq Éthiopiens pour trafic de drogue
Saudi Arabia executed five Ethiopians for drug trafficking on Thursday, the Interior Ministry announced, bringing the number of executions in 2026 to 205, according to an AFP tally based on official announcements.
They were found guilty of "smuggling hashish into the kingdom," according to a statement from the ministry published by the official news agency.
This is the third execution of Ethiopians in just a few months: five were put to death in June and five more in July, for a total of 32 this year – the highest number of foreigners facing the death penalty. These executions took place in the southwestern province of Asir.
Thousands of Ethiopians, who came via the perilous "Eastern route" linking the Horn of Africa to the Gulf petro-monarchy through Yemen, occupy low-skilled jobs in Saudi Arabia.
The UN Human Rights Watch (HRW) regularly calls on the kingdom to commute the death sentences handed down to dozens of them for "non-violent" drug-related offenses.
According to Amnesty International, Saudi Arabia was the third country that carried out the most executions between 2022 and 2025, behind China and Iran.
Riyadh considers the death penalty necessary to maintain order and assures that it is only applied after all appeals have been exhausted.
