L'armée américaine veut diffuser en direct l'exécution de Nidal Hasan
The execution by firing squad of the perpetrator of a massacre that left 13 dead at a military base in Texas in 2009 will be broadcast live, a U.S. Department of Defense official announced Thursday.
The execution of Nidal Hasan, a Palestinian-American Muslim who opened fire on November 5, 2009, at a medical facility on the sprawling Fort Hood base, will be "broadcast live," an official told AFP on condition of anonymity. "Details will follow," he added.
Previously, in a video broadcast Thursday on X by official accounts affiliated with the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had assured that this execution would be public.
Nidal Hasan "will be shot by soldiers, as is fitting, and we will ensure that the public can witness it, that it is a public event," the Pentagon chief said in the video filmed Wednesday.
"People need to understand that this kind of action has serious consequences," Pete Hegseth told far-right influencer Jack Posobiec aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
Military psychiatrist Nidal Hasan opened fire at Fort Hood to prevent soldiers from participating in a war he considered "illegal" in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Considered a lone wolf of the Al-Qaeda jihadist group, he had killed 13 people, including 12 soldiers, and injured dozens.
Hit in the spine during the shooting, he has been disabled ever since and uses a wheelchair. He was sentenced to death in 2013.
The Pentagon chief stressed that this will be the first military execution by firing squad since World War II, with the execution of Eddie Slovik, who was executed for desertion in 1945.
"I appreciate our mentality during the Second World War, which was about winning, about understanding that when the enemy attacks you, you have to stand firm," the minister added.
In another video, Jack Posobiec asked Pete Hegseth if Nidal Hasan had made a last wish.
"I don't care," he replied. "We'll see on December 3rd," the day the condemned man is to be executed.
The last military execution in the United States took place in 1961, when John Bennett was hanged for rape and attempted murder.
According to the human rights organization Amnesty International, at least 17 public executions were carried out in 2025 around the world: six in Afghanistan and 11 in Iran.
The Death Penalty Information Center indicates that 135 soldiers have been executed by the US Army since 1916.
The Pentagon announced earlier this week that US President Donald Trump had approved the execution of Hasan for carrying out the Al-Qaeda-inspired attack.
