Former FBI Director James Comey was charged Tuesday with "threatening the life" of President Donald Trump, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced.

James Comey, a designated target of Donald Trump's wrath, faces two charges, including one of "threatening the life and physical integrity of the President of the United States," issued by a jury in North Carolina, Mr. Blanche said during a press conference at the Department of Justice.

In November, a federal judge overturned two indictments orchestrated by the US president against James Comey and against the New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, because of the illegal appointment, according to her, of the prosecutor chosen by Donald Trump, who had initiated these proceedings.

James Comey was accused of lying under oath when he denied, in response to a question from a senator, that he had authorized his deputy to be quoted anonymously in the media about sensitive investigations conducted by the FBI.

This time, according to media outlets, including the New York Times, he is being prosecuted in connection with an incident involving the publication of a photo on Instagram in May 2025, in which US authorities, including Donald Trump, claimed to see a threat against the Republican president.

In this post, which was later removed, James Comey had shared a photo showing seashells forming the message “86 47” in the sand, the first number sometimes being used to signify the wish to make someone leave, or even kill, the second possibly referring to Donald Trump, the 47th president of the United States.

US federal authorities then announced they were investigating this “threat” which they said was made against Donald Trump.

“This means assassination, it’s written in black and white. It’s true that he wasn’t very competent, but he’s competent enough to know what this means,” the American president reacted during an interview with Fox News.
