Maintien de l'ordre en France : Le ministre de l'Intérieur durcit le ton à la veille de la mobilisation des gilets jaunes et des lycéens
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced on France 2 television on Friday, October 16, that stun grenades could be used again during the October 17 demonstrations "should there be extremely serious urban violence." Their use had been suspended during the high school student protests after a student had his hand torn off.
Invited to the "4 Truths" program, the minister extended his remarks to the entire category of intermediate weapons. This includes less-lethal launchers (LBDs), grenades, and electroshock weapons. "All intermediate weapons will be used to maintain order," he declared, before justifying this position by citing an "extremely degraded context."
The minister has been under pressure for several weeks. At least 215 students have been injured since the start of the high school student protests, and a 15-year-old had his hand blown off by a grenade on October 5 in Lens. Authorities have also recorded more than 5,000 arrests, approximately 85% of which involved minors.
France Unbowed, for its part, is calling for a ban on weapons of war at demonstrations. Launched in 2018, the Yellow Vest movement intends to resume its activities on October 17 with a large-scale demonstration, combining its demands against the high cost of living with those of high school students.
