Saturday's demonstrations in France resulted in 1,314 arrests and 75 interventions for fires, according to a provisional national tally from the Interior Ministry on Sunday, which reported 53 members of the security forces injured and 24 businesses looted.

In total, "289 public street actions were counted", demonstrations and gatherings which brought together 410,000 people on Saturday compared to 441 events and 550,000 demonstrators on October 17, the ministry said in a statement.

"The processions, which took place on public roads according to a planned route discussed with local authorities and supervised by internal security forces, were able to proceed," he continued.

Nevertheless, "at-risk groups, composed in particular of radical far-left and ultra-left activists, were able to form at the front, within, or on the margins of most of these marches" in several cities, giving rise to clashes, according to the statement.

Clashes broke out at the end of the procession in several cities including Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Tours among others, between protesters and law enforcement who responded with tear gas grenades.

According to a provisional tally established at 7:30 a.m. Sunday (6:30 a.m. GMT), 1,314 people were arrested, compared to 2,628 on October 17, according to the ministry

"53 law enforcement officers were injured, compared to 1,144 last week" and "75 fire interventions were carried out", compared to "2,025 last week", he details.

"Several businesses were damaged, 24 of them were looted" while "1,522 businesses were affected on Saturday the 17th", he added, specifying that this assessment was provisional.

"Several investigations have been opened," the ministry announced, without giving further details or the number of protesters who were injured.

The night was "calm", he points out, after the social mobilization which brought together between 410,000 and 800,000 people in France according to various sources.
