Moscou accuse Berlin de vouloir "à nouveau" la guerre
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Berlin of wanting "again" war against Russia, amid heightened tensions after Germany accused Moscow of sending an explosive-laden drone to Leipzig airport.
"They found a drone. They declared it to be a Russian drone, without anyone bothering to dig any deeper. This is ultimately the beginning of a real war," Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies on Sunday.
Berlin announced on Tuesday the closure on September 18 of the last Russian consulate on its territory, in Bonn (west), and of the Russian cultural center in Berlin, also called "Russian House".
This announcement was made after Germany officially accused Russia of sending a drone loaded with explosives in early August to Leipzig airport, a key military platform for the German army and for NATO.
"I remember that before the start of the Second World War, the Great Patriotic War, the Germans also closed their diplomatic missions... They want war again," commented Sergey Lavrov.
The Russian foreign minister also attacked Chancellor Friedrich Merz: "He is essentially heading towards a declaration of war against us. The lessons of history have not been learned. And it seems that all these metastases of Nazism are beginning to spread," said Mr. Lavrov.
"This is a dangerous phenomenon. And it seems to me that the Russian government will draw the appropriate conclusions," he added.
In response, Russia announced this week the upcoming closure of the Goethe Institute on its territory and summoned the German chargé d'affaires in Moscow, denouncing the "anti-Russian actions and statements of the German authorities".
For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the measures taken by German authorities against Russia as "another gross mistake".
