RIP MAGA? The stunned American right wing is thinking about the post-Trump era.

RIP MAGA? La droite américaine, sonnée, pense à l'après-Trump

How can we do without Trump? Should we turn our backs on the president's "MAGA" ideology and return to a more classic conservatism? Stunned by the Democratic triumph on Tuesday, the American right is questioning its future on Wednesday.

The Wall Street Journal has already called for a "reflection" among Republicans and urged them to break with the ultranationalist and identitarian rhetoric that allowed the 80-year-old billionaire to return to power.

"Tariffs and mass deportations cannot replace real income growth. Relying on the MAGA and masculinist base does not replace the quest of Hispanic, independent, and suburban voters who have abandoned the party," he slams.

On Wednesday, the first message from the official White House account on X was published to remind everyone that Donald Trump was "still president" until January 2029.

But the American political cycle is ruthless: the day after the "midterms", the country turns its attention to the next campaign, the most hectic of all, for the presidential election.

And Donald Trump is out of the running for good this time, since the Constitution forbids him from seeking a third term in 2028.

He would have been weakened in any case, but the monumental defeat suffered by his party, the Republicans, precipitated the phenomenon.

Former Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke of a "near-extinction event" for Republicans and has already predicted that they may have to wait until 2032 to retake Congress.

The Republican Party must "return to the principles of (former Republican President Ronald) Reagan. Voters rejected populism, chaos, Putin, and tariffs," wrote Republican Congressman Don Bacon on X.

The leading voices of the radical right, however, were almost silenced for a brief moment on Tuesday evening.

One only had to hear Steve Bannon, chief ideologue of the MAGA movement, exclaim "This can't be true...", upon discovering, during a live broadcast, the very high score of the Democrats among the male electorate, who had so clearly voted for Trump in 2024.

On Wednesday morning, he painted a bleak picture of the months ahead, in light of the investigations that Democratic lawmakers are expected to launch against the Trump administration and the president.

The White House "will turn into Fort Apache," he predicted.

In the famous American western "Fort Apache", the obstinacy of a commander entrenched in an isolated post leads to the massacre of his men.

Some far-right influencers are trying to avoid a complete reassessment of the "Make America Great Again" argument, preferring to point the finger at other targets rather than directly criticizing Donald Trump.

"Well done, neoconservatives!", criticized one of the most followed, Jack Posobiec, on X.

He thus places the blame for the electoral drubbing on an old and particular current within the Republican party, that of the interventionists, accused of having pushed towards war in Iran.

"Republicans need to get back to basics," Matthew Boyle, one of the leaders of Breitbart, the far-right news site, stated on X. "No more endless wars," he wrote. "On economic matters, make decisions that benefit real people, not lobbyists," the host also urged, calling for "reasonableness" in the implementation of immigration policies.

So far, few right-wing figures, whether moderate or radical, have publicly attacked the occupant of the White House.

The Republican party has, after all, completely tied its fate to that of the billionaire since 2016.

The same applies to far-right influencers, who have seen their audience and therefore their income follow the popularity of Donald Trump.

But it may only be a matter of time before the break is complete.

Former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a figure of the radical right now radically opposed to the president, said: "If the Republican Party wants to have a chance in the future, it must expel Donald Trump."

"We must begin by recognizing that Trump was and is the problem. Whispering it is not enough," former Republican congressman Bob Good said on the same platform.
