Séisme de magnitude 6,9 dans le nord du Japon, pas d’alerte au tsunami
This earthquake occurred off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, in the north of Honshu's main island, at a depth of 50 kilometers.
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan on Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced, adding that there was no tsunami threat. The earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, in the north of Honshu, the main island of Japan, at a depth of 50 kilometers, the agency said.
"At this stage, there are no reports of injuries, but we will continue to monitor and assess the situation regarding damage," said government spokesman Minoru Kihara. No damage was immediately reported. Reached by phone by AFP, a resident of the coastal city of Hashikami said the only damage to her home was a fallen picture frame. Images broadcast by public television NHK showed normal traffic in the streets of Hachinohe, a Pacific coast port city located not far from the earthquake's epicenter.
Located at the junction of several major tectonic plates, Japan experiences thousands of earthquakes every year. Most are imperceptible or moderate, but more violent tremors occur regularly. The country remains haunted by the memory of the massive magnitude 9.0 undersea earthquake followed by a tsunami that killed or left missing approximately 18,500 people and triggered a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima power plant.
