Trump appelle "Mohammed" et traite de "sympathisant terroriste" un candidat musulman au Sénat
Donald Trump has intensified his attacks on Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, calling him "Mohammed" and portraying him without evidence as a "terrorist sympathizer," which led El-Sayed on Thursday to joke about the president's difficulty pronouncing his name.
"Mohammed El-Sayed is a terrible candidate for the 'Dumocrats' (a pejorative pun used by Trump to describe Democrats, editor's note). (...) Mohammed takes us back to the time of jihad. He is a radical EXTREMIST, a terrorist sympathizer," the US president said Wednesday on his Truth Social platform.
Abdul El-Sayed - engaged in a very close race with Republican Mike Rogers for a Senate seat in the strategic state of Michigan - denounced a political maneuver one month before the midterm elections.
"My name is Abdul, and he knows it. The only reason he refuses to say it is because I constantly put him in a difficult position," he said Thursday at a campaign event in a restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
This figure from the left wing of the Democratic Party accused Donald Trump of "using (his) name and (his) religion to divert attention from the suffering that his policies inflict on the population."
"It's not Abdulllll. It's just Abdul. So, try again. And pronounce it correctly. Because in November, we're going to teach you how to say it properly, preceded by the title of senator," he added.
Donald Trump and his supporters have intensified their attacks against Mr. El-Sayed, accusing him and his family of having ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and the jihadist organization Al-Qaeda.
The US president also claimed on Wednesday that Mr. El-Sayed was the "best friend" of Hasan Piker, an influencer accused of anti-Semitism, who has become a liability for the American left.
A former supporter of his campaign, Hasan Piker was nevertheless publicly disavowed by Abdul El-Sayed at the end of August. "The safety of Jews is as dear to me as the safety of my own daughters," the Democratic candidate declared, asserting that Hasan Piker in no way represented his campaign.
The Michigan seat, a state that voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, is considered crucial for Democrats in their quest to regain control of the Senate.
Abdul El-Sayed, who enjoys the support of progressive figures such as Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Elizabeth Warren, has campaigned against the influence of major donors and pro-Israel organizations on American politics. His platform also includes universal access to healthcare and higher taxes on billionaires.
