Tuerie en France : "un attentat à connotation raciste, probablement islamophobe", selon le maire
The mayor of Trappes, a town in the Paris region where a massacre caused the death of one person and injured five others, three of them seriously, denounced on Friday "an attack, with racist connotations, probably Islamophobic", calling for "republican harmony".
"We are collectively responsible for what has just happened and what could happen again in our country, and our responsibility is to de-escalate, to achieve republican harmony," Ali Rabeh told the press.
"A 12-year-old girl is between life and death as we speak, who was targeted by a burst of automatic gunfire in our country. Her crime is probably being racialized," the mayor added gravely.
"This is probably one of the first, an initial attempt at mass crimes with Islamophobic and racist overtones," he continued, also praising "the courage of the law enforcement officers" who arrested the suspected shooter during his rampage.
"The people who were targeted today, it could have been my mother, my brothers, my sisters-in-law, etc.", Mr. Rabeh also said, very moved.
"We must be collectively clear-sighted about the fact that speeches which ideologically arm those who are capable of taking action are criminal and must therefore be condemned as such," he insisted, before concluding: "in a great country like ours, we must advocate for civil concord."
