Turquie: Erdogan briguera un nouveau mandat lors d'une élection anticipée, affirme un conseiller
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, 72, intends to seek another term in an early election in 2028, in order to circumvent the constitution which prevents him from running again if he completes his term, one of his chief advisors said on Thursday.
The vote "will take place on April 16, 2028 (one month before the theoretical end of his five-year term, editor's note), if the decision to hold new elections is taken with the support of 360 parliamentarians" out of 600, Mehmet Uçum, the Turkish head of state's legal advisor, told several media outlets, adding that it will be his last term if he wins the election.
The Justice and Development Party (AKP, Islamist-conservative) and its allies currently control 326 seats in the Turkish Parliament, but Mr. Uçum had mentioned in June the possibility of dissolving the assembly with a view to calling an early election.
The head of state could also enlist the support of MPs from other parties in negotiations, according to analysts, or even undertake a project of constitutional reform.
In power since 2003, first as Prime Minister and then, since 2014, as President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan would thus be seeking a fourth term.
