A 10-year-old boy fatally shoots their neighbor during an argument with his mother

In Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, a 10-year-old boy shot and killed a 16-year-old neighbor during a violent altercation between the teenager and her mother over loud music.

The child's mother, Elaina Gomez-Villeda, 40, told investigators that the dispute with her neighbors erupted when she went to complain about the volume of their music, local station KRQE reports.

During the confrontation, the woman in her forties ordered her young son to retrieve her firearm. The child then left the apartment and shot 16-year-old Keinerlein Rangel, fatally wounding her, according to authorities.

"I'm probably going to jail," the mother texted her husband before calling 911 to report the incident.

While Elaina Gomez-Villeda was still on the line with emergency services, the teenager's father tried to break down her door and smashed a window, police said.

The suspect then grabbed a firearm and fired at the enraged father, she told law enforcement.

"I thought we were going to die," she told police, according to the American media outlet. "These people often cause trouble. I didn't think I was being targeted, but that's how it is."

Upon arriving at the scene around 4 p.m., Albuquerque police officers came under fire from inside the apartment and took cover. They saw Elaina Gomez-Villeda with a gun in her hand, chasing three people outside. An officer fired in her direction but missed.

The 10-year-old boy, whose identity has not been released due to his age, has not yet been charged. Investigators are working with the prosecutor to determine what charges will be brought against him given his young age.

His mother, meanwhile, was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, child abuse, inciting juvenile delinquency, negligent provision of a firearm to a minor, assault, and receiving stolen goods.
