USA : L’Afrique du Sud tente de bloquer la vente aux enchères d’objets ayant appartenu à Nelson Mandela
South Africa opposes the auction of certain items belonging to Nelson Mandela in the United States. The government filed a petition with the Supreme Court on Tuesday in an attempt to block the sale.
The government's Heritage Protection Agency (SAHRA) and the Ministry of Culture are asking the Supreme Court to declare the sale and export of these objects illegal, as they are part of South Africa's heritage.
Since 2021, the rainbow nation has been trying to prevent the sale of these items, which include the identity card of the former ANC leader, his iconic shirts, his writings, gifts received from US Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and the key to the prison cell on Robben Island where he spent 18 of his 27 years in prison under the Apartheid regime.
An initiative of Makaziwe Mandela
According to the South African press, it was Makaziwe, Mandela's daughter, who authorized the New York-based Guernsey's auction house to sell items in order to raise funds for the construction of a memorial garden next to Madiba's resting place in the village of Qunu.
