Diourbel : Face au juge, l'apprenti avoue son « péché mignon » et écope d’un an ferme
“Yamba is my guilty pleasure.” With this statement, DM Cissokho, a trainee driver, attempted to convince the Diourbel High Court that he was simply a user and not a drug trafficker. L'Observateur, which attended the hearing, explains that he was arrested in Bambey by gendarmes from Touba after a chase, while in possession of 21 kilos of Indian hemp and 40,000 CFA francs.
In court, the defendant, already sentenced to two months in prison for drug use, admitted to owning the drugs while contesting the charges of offering and supplying them. "Your Honor, Yamba is my guilty pleasure (sama yeuf-la), I admit it. But I've never been a dealer," he declared, claiming he had bought the 21 packets in Diamniadio for his personal use. He also asserted that the 40,000 FCFA found on him had been sent to him by his father to buy hay.
The newspaper of the Future Media Group reports that his lawyer successfully lobbied for the charges to be reduced to possession for the purpose of drug use, whereas the prosecution initially pursued the defendant for offering and supplying drugs. Following the prosecutor's closing arguments, which relied on the application of the law, the court sentenced Cissokho to one year in prison.
