Portugal : Dakar remet à Lisbonne un redoutable escroc, une traque de trois ans pour 37 millions F CFA
The manhunt is over for a 59-year-old conman wanted by Portuguese authorities for four years. The man, whose identity has not been released, was arrested in Dakar before being extradited to Lisbon. "The suspect used a well-known method of convincing his victims that he possessed 'blackened' banknotes that could be made genuine again with a special chemical," reports Les Échos, relaying this information released by Portuguese authorities.
The same source indicates that the accused, who presented himself as an "African diplomat," allegedly convinced several people to hand over large sums of money and valuables.
The newspaper reports that the losses from this scam are estimated at 37 million CFA francs. "The victims reportedly discovered too late that the bills were counterfeit and worthless," the daily adds, before noting that the man in his fifties, who had been the subject of an international arrest warrant since 2022, has been placed in pretrial detention in Lisbon, on the orders of a Portuguese judge.
