Thiès : la nièce du maire Alioune Sarr condamnée pour avoir insulté une militante de Pastef
The controversy between the mayor of Notto Diobass, Alioune Sarr, and Pastef activist Mame Diarra Diop has taken a new legal turn. Sokhna Sène, presented as a niece of the mayor, appeared before the Thiès court for flagrant offenses on charges of defamation via a computer system.
The controversy began with a video posted on TikTok by Mame Diarra Diop, in which she criticized Mayor Alioune Sarr's administration. This outburst did not sit well with Sokhna Sène. Wanting to defend her uncle, she recorded an audio message filled with insults directed at the activist and sent it to her via WhatsApp.
In court, the defendant admitted to the charges against her before offering her apologies.
Joining the proceedings as a civil party, Mame Diarra Diop explained that Sokhna Sène did not have her phone number. According to her, the defendant obtained her contact information from a third party before sending her the insulting message.
Speaking in court, her lawyer, Omar Faty, argued that the defendant could not afford to insult his client simply because her uncle was mayor. He reminded the court that Alioune Sarr is a public figure holding an elected office and that criticism of his municipal management is part of democratic debate. For the plaintiff, Sokhna Sène had attacked his client's honor and dignity. Faty therefore requested 30 million CFA francs in damages.
In his submissions, the public prosecutor considered that the facts were consistent and requested two months of imprisonment for the defendant.
The defense, represented by Ms. Sène, argued that Mame Diarra Diop provoked the insults. She asserted that had it not been for Mame Diarra Diop's insults against her uncle, Sokhna Sène would not have acted as she did. The defense therefore pleaded for the acquittal of its client.
The court found Sokhna Sène guilty and sentenced her to two months' imprisonment, suspended, and a fine of 300,000 FCFA. She must also pay Mame Diarra Diop 50,000 FCFA in damages.
