Fin du groupe Rapadio : révélations sur l’éclatement du «ministère de l’Éducation nationale de la rue»
In a lengthy interview published this Tuesday in L'Observateur, Ibrahima Ndiaye, formerly known as Iba in Rapadio, opened the album of memories retracing the birth, rise to power, peak, and then demise of this rap group which, in his opinion, deserves the title of "Ministry of National Education of the Street." "We educated many young people and showed them the right path in the streets," he explained.
Founded in the early 1990s, Rapadio has seen many members come and go. But the best-known names are Keyti, Makhtar le Kagoulard, Bibson, and of course, Iba.
On stage, their faces were hidden behind balaclavas, as if they were forcing the audience to focus on the message rather than the messenger. The albums "Ku wét xam sa bop" (1998) and "Soldaarou mbëd" (2001) allowed them to shake up the Senegalese hip hop scene, which at the time was dominated by PBS, Daara J and others.
But problems soon arose. The price of success? Ego clashes? Iba pleads immaturity and naivety. And points the finger at unseen hands. "We were young, we had neither good management nor good advisors," confesses one of Rapadio's founders. "Some were tasked with weakening the group and wanted its breakup at all costs. They were looking for the weak link to pull off their scheme."
The weak link? Iba doesn't name him directly. He seems to offer some clues: "Our participation in the album 'Frères ennemis' created a lot of problems. Keyti joined 'Optimist Production,' and Talla Diagne used Pendra and Lune to convince Bibson to release the album 'Clandestin' with Xuman. This album caused a lot of problems for Rapadio. Subsequently, Bibson walked out. That was the end of our mission, as fate would have it, even if it all ended over minor details."
