Rivalité PBS-Rapadio : retour sur la bagarre entre membres des deux groupes au concert de Alpha Blondy à Dakar
Rivalries between rappers are a classic feature of the hip-hop scene, and the Senegalese scene is no exception. It's rare, but the "I'm the best, the strongest" claims can sometimes escalate into physical confrontations, especially when they share the stage. And when muscles do the talking, it inevitably leaves its mark.
“Iba”, a founding member of the defunct group Rapadio, towards the end of the 1990s, wears one. In his memory: digging into his memories as a former rapper, in a long interview published in L'Observateur on Tuesday, September 22, he dusted off a long-ago clash with the members of Positive Black Soul (PBS), then at the top of the rap pyramid in Senegal.
Iba didn't specify the date. The events seem to have taken place between the late 1990s and the early 2000s. It was at the Stade de l'Amitié, later renamed Stade Léopold-Senghor, during an Alpha Blondy concert organized by Radio Nostalgie. An anecdote: the Ivorian star "demanded that the organizers pay him before starting his performance ," the rapper mentioned in passing.
In the opening act, Senegalese musicians took turns on stage. “The stadium was packed,” Iba recalls. “ All the groups had performed. When our turn came, PBS refused, without our knowledge, to let us play with their DAT [Digital Audio Tape] player , even though the audience was calling for Rapadio. Father Khalil Guèye [at the time a star presenter at RTS, the national television station] had to come and get me so I could explain myself to the PBS guys.”
This intervention was supposed to resolve the situation, but it only made things worse. Iba: "Our discussion with them escalated into an argument, then a fight. They told us, ' You're not playing on our player.' That's when we understood why we hadn't played for an hour. Our manager and Shaka Bab's, who lived nearby, quickly went to get a player so we could play."
Everything will be back to normal for Rapadio. "We felt the public's satisfaction. This concert was as if we had organized it ourselves," Iba rejoices . "The next day, the newspapers gave us a front-page feature, and the radio and television stations were not to be outdone."
