Décès de Séfou Fagbohoun, figure majeure de la politique béninoise
A giant of Beninese politics has fallen. Séfou Fagbohoun, businessman and founder of the African Movement for Development and Progress (MADEP), passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the age of 80. A highly influential political figure in the Plateau department, he became known for his charitable work in his native region following the National Conference of the Nation's Active Forces.
Member of Parliament several times
With his party, MADEP, he was elected to Parliament in the first legislature in 1991, and again in 2007, during the fifth legislature. In 2009, his political party joined a large opposition coalition then called Union Makes the Nation. Under the banner of this coalition, he was re-elected to Parliament in 2011.
Séfou Fagbohoun has been involved in politics for about thirty years, but also has had run-ins with the law. He notably spent two years in prison (2006-2008) for his mismanagement of Sonacop, the National Petroleum Products Marketing Company.
