SERIGNE SIDY MOUHAMED KOUNTA, UN HÉRITIER DE LA LIGNÉE KOUNTIYOU S’EN EST ALLÉ
OBITUARY – SERIGNE SIDY MOUHAMED KOUNTA, AN HEIR OF THE KOUNTIYOU LINEAGE, HAS PASSED AWAY
The Kountiyou family of Ndiassane is in mourning. Serigne Sidy Mouhamed Kounta, son of Serigne Sidy Yakhya Kounta, the fourth Caliph General of the Khadre order in Ndiassane, passed away at dawn today in the holy city of Ndiassane after a long illness. His passing marks the end of a life deeply rooted in the transmission of religious knowledge, fidelity to the family heritage, and service to the Tariqa.
Born in 1957 in Ndiassane, Serigne Sidy Mouhamed Kounta grew up in an environment marked by the spirituality and traditions of the Kountiyou family. Son of a great religious figure, he was imbued from a very young age with the values of faith, discipline and knowledge that characterize this lineage.
He received his early education in Latmingué, a village founded by his father, before continuing his Koranic studies in Mauritania. There, he deepened his religious knowledge and also acquired fluency in the Hassaniya language. Upon his return to Ndiassane, he distinguished himself by his wisdom, kindness, humility, and commitment to human and spiritual values.
Serigne Sidy Mouhamed Kounta belonged to a generation of individuals whose relationships were founded on brotherhood, respect, and loyalty. He maintained a particularly strong friendship with Makhtar Bay Bou. His life was also marked by his relationships with Dieyly Kamatane, Yakhya Khady, Abidine Bou Xess, and Ndankh Mouhamed Babou. These friendships bear witness to an era when spiritual and human bonds held a fundamental place in community life.
In 2000, he became the second caliph of Sheikh Sidy Yakhya. For twenty-six years, he fulfilled this responsibility with devotion and discretion. His role extended far beyond his religious duties. A true ambassador of the Tariqa, he also served as a representative of the caliphs to the community of Bargny.
In this mission, he is continuing the family tradition, following in the footsteps of his father and brothers, notably El Hadji Mame Bou and Cheikhal Bécaye. He also maintained excellent relations with the current caliph, Cheikh Bou Sidy Makhtar Kounta, to whom he had great regard and deep esteem.
Beyond his rank and responsibilities, Serigne Sidy Mouhamed Kounta will be remembered above all as a humble, protective, generous man, deeply devoted to his fellow human beings. His personality was marked by kindness, wisdom, and a great loyalty to the values of his family and community.
With his passing, the Kountiyou family, the followers of the Tarikha, and the community of Ndiassane have lost a figure whose life story testifies to his attachment to a religious heritage passed down through generations. His life was that of a man of faith and duty, dedicated to preserving fraternal bonds, serving spiritual authorities, and cultivating love for his neighbor.
His burial is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Ndiassane. The funeral will take place on Tuesday in the same religious city.
May Allah, in His infinite mercy, grant him His forgiveness, illuminate his grave and welcome him into the gardens of Firdaws.
