MP Abdou Mbow strongly criticized, in a statement published on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the approach of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, regarding parliamentary inquiry committees. The leader of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) accuses him of manipulating the national representation for political ends, particularly in matters of... Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency ( ASER) and special funds from institutions.

The tone is virulent in his statement entitled "Ousmane Sonko's Stubbornness in the Undermining of Our Parliamentary Institution." Abdou Mbow believes that the former head of government and leader of Pastef is compromising the dignity of the National Assembly by confusing "institutional authority with partisan power."
The MP criticizes him for repeatedly announcing accompanying commissions of inquiry, which he considers to be public indictments. He sees this as a desire to target political opponents rather than strengthen parliamentary oversight. "The National Assembly is neither an extension of Pastef, nor a personal tribunal, nor a weapon at the disposal of his majority," he insists, reminding everyone that the institution represents the Senegalese people in all their diversity.
The ASER 37 billion case at the heart of the criticism
Abdou Mbow then turned his attention to the proposed parliamentary inquiry into the 37 billion CFA franc scandal involving the Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER). He argued that such an initiative could not be launched since the case was already in the hands of the judiciary. Citing Article 54 of the National Assembly's rules of procedure and what he presented as the established jurisprudence of the Constitutional Council, the MP invoked the principle of separation of powers. "When the judiciary is involved, Parliament remains silent. It respects the process," he asserted, accusing the former Prime Minister of resorting to manipulation and populism.
The parliamentarian also criticized the announcement of an investigation into the institutions' special funds for the period 2012-2021. He reproached Ousmane Sonko for having limited the announced timeframe to this period, which ends before the current majority came to power. Abdou Mbow also criticized the subsequent explanation that this limitation was due to a slip of the tongue. "You want to search the pockets of your predecessors, but you refuse to let us look in yours from 2024 to today. Is that your idea of a break with the past?" he exclaimed.
According to the MP, this controversy reveals a contradiction between rhetoric about transparency and the actual commitment to accountability in the management of public funds. Along the same lines, he accuses the majority MPs of confusing parliamentary oversight with settling scores, and denounces their lack of preparation in reviewing the cases.
In conclusion, Abdou Mbow reiterates that the National Assembly's missions are to pass laws, oversee the government's actions, represent the people, and evaluate public policies. He also contests its authority to conduct audits within other institutions of the Republic. "The Republic cannot become the stage for your desire to settle scores," he concludes, calling for an end to what he describes as institutional drift.
