Accord avec le FMI : Thierno Bocoum charge Sonko et Abdourahmane Sarr
The agreement reached between Senegal and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) continues to fuel controversy. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, September 2nd, Thierno Bocoum, president of AGIR-LES LEADERS, accuses Ousmane Sonko and former Minister of Economy Abdourahmane Sarr of contradictions and responsibility for the current situation.
The former MP criticizes the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, for having been "fully involved" in negotiations with the IMF during his time as Prime Minister. He also accuses the former Prime Minister of being behind the communication about the "hidden debt," which he claims contributed to the suspension of the previous IMF program and the tightening of financing conditions for Senegal. "A partner who is told they have been misled about debt figures for five years is not going to renegotiate on the same terms as before," he argues.
Furthermore, Mr. Bocoum's main criticism of Sonko is that he is now demanding the publication of the memorandum when he claims he did not publish any during his two years as Prime Minister. "He participated in these discussions for many months. As head of government, he was therefore fully involved in all the conditions required for the program he was negotiating," he points out.
As for the former Minister of Economy, Abdourahmane Sarr, Thierno Bocoum accuses him of contradicting himself on the issue of debt sustainability. The former member of parliament points out that in October 2025, while serving as minister, Abdourahmane Sarr reaffirmed "the sustainable nature of the public debt." In February 2025, he also described the government's debt reduction trajectory as "credible."
For the president of AGIR-LES LEADERS, these statements contrast with the former minister's now-reported position on the discussions with the IMF. "The man who was still officially defending debt sustainability when he was a minister must now explain why he believes that the same debt stock now justifies treatment aimed at restoring its viability," he argues.
However, while Thierno Bocoum believes the two former government members are ill-suited to lecture on the matter, he nevertheless demands transparency regarding the announced agreement between the IMF and Senegal. He requests the publication of the memorandum of economic and financial policies or, failing that, its submission to the National Assembly, so that a debate can be held on the commitments made on behalf of the Senegalese people.
