Audience à Washington : Ce que le Président Diomaye a dit à la Directrice générale du FMI
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye met with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, on Tuesday. The meeting, which took place two weeks after the agreement was reached at the Fund's staff level on September 1st, was held at the IMF headquarters in Washington.
During the discussions, the Head of State thanked Ms. Georgieva for her personal commitment to the process that led to this agreement. He also commended the quality of the collaboration between the Fund's teams and those of the State, "which made it possible to converge on the technical agreement of September 1st on a new three-year program, supported by the Extended Credit Facility."
According to the Presidency, both parties wish to move "quickly towards the approval of the program by the IMF Executive Board" in order to preserve the momentum created by the technical agreement and to "ease the country's liquidity constraints without delay".
During the discussions, the President of the Republic also reaffirmed the government's determination to implement reforms aimed at strengthening public finances, debt sustainability and private investment.
"The recovery will not come at the expense of the people."
"The Head of State has been clear on one point: the recovery will not be at the expense of the people, especially the most vulnerable. Social protection is a central component of the program," the Presidency reports.
According to the latter, the Head of State assured that the National Family Security Scholarship Program will be strengthened, that student scholarships will be preserved and that universal health coverage will be consolidated.
"The reform of energy subsidies will be gradual and better targeted, so that the public effort goes first to the households that need it most," the Head of State told the Managing Director of the IMF.
Private companies and investment are at the heart of the priorities
The real economy is also presented as "at the heart of the system." The plan to clear arrears owed to private companies should restore their cash flow, preserve jobs, and revive investment. Strategic and priority projects will also be pursued, within limits compatible with debt sustainability.
President Faye's stated objective is that these various efforts will help to drive stronger, more inclusive growth and create sustainable jobs for young people.
For the Senegalese executive, this meeting thus opens a new phase of cooperation between Senegal and the IMF, based on transparency, responsibility and concrete results for the people.
The Presidency finally assures that Senegal "will honor its commitments" and will continue the dialogue with the Fund as well as with all its partners, in order to open "a new cycle of growth and shared prosperity".

Get ready the people of Sénégal.
