Boubacar Boris Diop voit en Ousmane Sonko un héritier de Cheikh Anta Diop et de Mamadou Dia
Ousmane Sonko's political trajectory is central to Boubacar Boris Diop's interpretation of Pastef's evolution. In an interview with Impact SN, the essayist argues that the party maintains a political identity based on Pan-Africanism, sovereignty, and the moralization of public life.
Boubacar Boris Diop explains that several statements by Pastef officials helped to clarify this direction. He cites in particular Ousmane Sonko and MP Guy Marius Sagna. "I started from a very simple observation: through the statements of Sonko and Guy Marius Sagna, in particular, Pastef is the only party formulating clear proposals on pan-Africanism, political and economic sovereignty, the imperative of moralizing public life, among other major issues," he states.
The essayist believes that other political parties do not offer a comparable platform on these issues. He does, however, cite Tahirou Sarr, whose position differs from that of Pastef, which "systematically opposes 'nationalism' and 'pan-Africanism'."
For Boubacar Boris Diop, the political debate cannot be limited to criticisms leveled at Ousmane Sonko's party. He believes that his opponents must also present their own proposals on issues of sovereignty and economic policy.
He establishes a link between this political orientation and the crisis that now pits the two heads of the Executive against each other. According to him, Ousmane Sonko's fidelity to his electoral commitments is one of the factors contributing to the crisis at the highest levels of the State.
"Even though we know that comparison is not reason, Sonko can be considered the heir of Cheikh Anta Diop, Mamadou Dia and all those who under various ideological banners fought for the liberation, still unfinished, of our country," he affirms.
The essayist believes that Ousmane Sonko's political consistency is an important element in understanding his popularity. "It is individuals who give substance to a political project, and for almost three years of Pastef being in power, Sonko has remained remarkably faithful to his ideas and principles, and the crisis at the top of the state is largely explained by his determination to respect his commitments at all costs," he continues.
Boubacar Boris Diop also addressed the criticisms leveled against the Pastef leader. He specifically mentioned those who accused him of an arrogant attitude. "Some consider him arrogant, but in Senegal, not trying to please everyone is a tremendous quality for a public figure," he stated.
The writer also draws a link between Pastef's rise to power and the question of the personal integrity of political leaders. He points out that the party had made the fight against corruption and the moralization of public life important elements of its platform.
According to him, Ousmane Sonko had already faced this issue before coming to power. He recalls that after finishing third in the 2019 presidential election, his status as a tax inspector was used in the political clashes that pitted him against Macky Sall's government.
Boubacar Boris Diop believes that the lack of evidence of mismanagement in his professional career contributed to this situation. He then brings up the sex scandal that pitted Ousmane Sonko against the government at the time.
The author draws a comparison with Bassirou Diomaye Faye, also a former tax and land inspector. "Even though these stories about political funds and the First Ladies' Foundation are quite troubling, I remain convinced that Diomaye and Sonko have in common that they never conceived of politics as a means of amassing a personal fortune," he states.
Boubacar Boris Diop, however, believes that some accusations are too serious to be made without caution. He maintains that the question of the integrity of political leaders must remain separate from their institutional role.
